NIST Fields Input on Proposed National Emerging Tech Standards Strategy

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) seeks industry input on implementing the U.S. Government’s National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology (USGNSSCET). They’re inviting feedback on risks, benefits, and how the government can use its budget to support CET standards development in areas like AI, quantum computing, and clean energy. The strategy ensures transparency and effectiveness while building on private sector standards. The request for information (RFI) will be open for 60 days.

DOE Announces $150 Million to Strengthen Domestic Critical Material Supply Chains

The U.S. Department of Energy is allocating up to $150 million, as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to support the domestic production and refinement of critical minerals and materials. This funding aims to reduce reliance on foreign sources, meet the demand for clean energy technologies, and create jobs in mining and energy sectors across the country. The initiative will promote research and development in technologies for sustainable sourcing, recycling, and alternatives for critical minerals.

CivStart Announces Startups for 2023 Accelerator Cohort

CivStart’s Accelerator program has welcomed eight startup companies dedicated to addressing civic issues for local governments. Over a 24-month period, these startups will receive mentorship, access to government tech experts, and support from established firms. The cohort includes CivicBell, a platform connecting residents and governments, and Zero Circle, simplifying government funding access for environmentally compliant small to mid-tier businesses. CivStart selected these startups from approximately 60 applications, focusing on innovators passionate about solving government challenges and making a lasting impact, especially those with a civic-minded, mission-driven approach.

Pentagon Office of Strategic Capital’s Investment Strategy Expected Later this Year

The Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) plans to release its first investment strategy later this year, focusing on critical technology areas like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and quantum science. OSC aims to increase private capital investment in these areas and explore industries within them, both near the department and within the supply chain. OSC, established in December, aims to provide long-term funds to bridge the “valley of death” between lab development and field deployment. The investment strategy will be reviewed by a strategic capital advisory council, involving various DoD offices.

GSA Opens Office to Support Biden’s Open Government Plan

The General Services Administration (GSA) has established the Open Government Secretariat Program Management Office to support the Biden administration’s Open Government National Action Plan. The office, announced by GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan, has an annual budget of $1 million and a permanent team to implement the Fifth Open Government National Action Plan. DOE Announces $125 Million in Grid Resilience Grants for States and Tribal Nations to Modernize Electric Grid

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is providing $125 million to nine states and five tribal nations as part of the seventh cohort of Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This funding aims to modernize the electric grid, enhance resilience to climate-driven extreme weather, ensure power reliability, and help achieve clean energy goals. Since May 2023, DOE has distributed over $580.5 million in these grants as part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda.

Case Study: Tech and Ecosystem Analysis on Aircraft Batteries

Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) wanted to understand battery technology trends and the ecosystem of labs and suppliers in order to replace aging systems in existing platforms. PSF AI-MI was used to identify emerging trends in aircraft battery use cases and over 100 companies and labs as potential partners for AFRL.

7 Projects to Receive DOE Funding for AI-based Fusion Energy Research

The Department of Energy is providing $29 million in funding for seven projects that will utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning to address challenges in fusion energy research. Researchers from 19 institutions will use AI for scientific discovery, diagnostic data analysis, plasma control, simulation data analysis, and data-driven predictions. The projects aim to develop data management systems to make research accessible via public databases and will run for a maximum of three years, with $11 million allocated for fiscal year 2023, subject to additional appropriations.

CISA Announces K-12 Education Technology Secure by Design Pledge

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has announced a voluntary pledge for K-12 Education Technology software manufacturers aligned with CISA’s Secure by Design principles. It outlines three principles for signatories to follow:

  • Take Ownership of Customer Security Outcomes: Manufacturers should provide Single Sign-On (SSO) and security audit logs at no extra cost to schools within six months.
  • Embrace Radical Transparency and Accountability: Manufacturers should publish a Secure by Design roadmap, and vulnerability disclosure policy, ensure correct CVE entries, and share security statistics within specified timeframes.
  • Lead from the Top: A top business leader, other than the CTO or CISO, should be publicly named as responsible for security within three months.
